1.4 The Right to Vote

1. The original Constitution does not guarantee everyone or anyone the right to vote. 2.  All the amendments about voting are limits on what the states can do instead of allowing everyone to vote. 3. They needed 2/3 of the states to ratify it so they thought it would infringe on the states too much and it wouldn't get passed. 4. The forms of voter disenfranchisement are growing in this country. 5. He mentions voter ID laws, draconian purging of voter rolls and gerrymandering. 6. 1.3 Senate Election Preview

1. The democrats don't have the majority in senate and ten democratic senators are up for re-election in states that Trump won. 2. 10 elections look competitive. 3. The other candidate, Cramer, is very tight with Trump and he is popular in North Dakota. 4. This is the tightest poll and she is behind by o.6 points. This gives no indication of who might win, making it a tossup. 5. Dean Heller at first did not support repealing Obamacare and then after Trump pressured him, he voted to repeal it. Nevada voters don't like Trump. He has 45 percent approval and 51 percent disapproval. 6. The candidates are Marsha Blackburn and Phil Bredesen. Tennessee voters are happy with Trump. He has 56 percent approval and 40 percent disapproval. 7. He has respect from democrats because he stood up to the NRA even though he is a republican. 1. Who holds this meeting and how long is it expected to last? The senate judiciary committee holds this and it should last about a week. 2. What is the purpose of these hearings? It is to shed light on the nominee's legal reasoning and record. 3. Why are Democrats arguing that this judge may have a conflict of interest in the future? Trump appointed Kavanaugh and he might have to rule in a case deciding basically if the president is above the law. 4. What do most people expect to be the result of these hearings? People expect Kavanaugh to get resistance from democrats but sail through to the supreme court. 5. What did Brett Kavanaugh do before he was nominated to this post? He was on the White House council during George W. Bush's administration and a staff secretary. He also investigated Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky and the Whitewater scandal. 6.
